A shift manager running 30 hourly employees finds out about clock-in failures the hard way — payroll comes back wrong, an employee complains, or an admin spots a missing punch two days later. By then the employee can't remember exactly when they arrived, the manager has to guess, and someone's pay is either short or inflated. This is the moment that makes managers realize there's no early warning system between 'punch happened' and 'payroll processes.'

The gap persists because the HR software vendor selling the timeclock is also the one who would have to expose its own failure rates. Build a lightweight agent that polls ADP Workforce Now's time and attendance API on a rolling basis, detects punch gaps or failed attempts against scheduled shifts, and texts or emails the direct manager within 15 minutes of a missed expected punch — before the shift ends, while the employee is still on-site.

Where to start

Start with restaurant groups and retail chains where a single manager oversees multiple locations and can't physically watch every clock — the cost of a missed punch is highest there, and a regional manager overseeing five sites will pay to avoid weekly correction calls from each location.

The hard part

ADP's API does not expose failed punch attempts — only successful ones — so detecting a failure means inferring it from a scheduled shift with no corresponding punch record, which produces false positives for late arrivals and requires calibration per customer to avoid alert fatigue before you've earned trust.
